About Yoga for Kids
Cool Calm Kids Yoga is an empowering, fun and relaxing yoga program for children developed by Mandy BeckerKnox, an experienced yoga and meditation teacher and mother. It is a program which makes the beneficial practices of yoga accessible and fun fo primary school aged children.
Children can attend Cool Calm Kids classes or Yoga & Art Holiday Camps, or they can use the Cool Calm Kids CD, DVD (in production!) and other resources at home.
Why kids should learn yoga
Many children these days are almost as busy and stressed as their mums and dads -- with long hours at school, homework, social pressures, extra curricular activities and often day care. Kids have become reliant on computers and electronic devices for entertainmet and spend less time in nature. To balance their lifestyles kids need to learn the coping skills to help them relax and unwind.
Yoga helps us all to connect with the inner parts of ourselves which give our lives meaning and a strong unshakable sense of self-worth. In Cool Calm Kids Yoga children learn to draw on their own resources and develop the skills to manage stress -- even before stress becomes an issue for them. They learn to turn their attention inward to look for the peace, beauty and strength which lies at the heart of every child.
When primary school aged children are introduced to the basic relaxation principles of yoga, they can use these skills at any stage of their lives, and hopefully avoid stress, depression and any associated problems now and in the future. Kids become empowered and confident when they realise they have control over their thoughts, emotions, reactions to situations.
Yoga is also great for kids as it tones and strengthens the body, helps regulate weight, prevents illness, while meditation helps children concentrate better, display greater imagination, neutralise powerful and negative emotions, and have a healthy, positive outlook on life.
Yoga can have a profound effect on children who have been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, anxiety, depression, nervous disorders, emotionally based problems, trauma recovery, social dysfunctions and other conditions which may be the result of excess energy. Through yoga children learn that they are in control of their emotions and learn the tools and techniques to channel their energy in a positive and constructive direction.
Cool Calm Kids Classes & Holiday Camps
Mandy offers classes and Kids Yoga & Art Camps in the school holidays at Kookaburra Creek Yoga Centre in the Perth hills.
In classes, children learn the art of yoga through movement, songs, games, yoga breathing, guided meditations, yoga poems and songs and traditional yoga poses.
On a deeper level, children will learn to breathe deeply, transform negative thought patterns and responses, manage stress, enjoy good health and establish a spritual context for life experiences. Learning yoga as a child provides a strong foundation for life.
